#ParisFashionStories EPISODE 9: STRONG WOMEN

Ready-to-wear autumn-winter 2019/2020. For their Autumn/Winter 2019/2020 collections labels across the board wanted to project an image of strong, powerful women.

At Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquiere came up with a sporty warrior-inspired offering. The label’s beloved checked monochrome print was on proud display, often bringing to mind the energy and dynamism of the race track. We also saw leather skull-caps, a nod to those worn last century by pilots and Grand Prix motorists.

Louis Vuitton embraced creativity with its decor too, installing a replica Pompidou Centre facade inside a Louvre courtyard. Some dared to ask why the label didn’t simply choose to hold the show in front of the Pompidou itself – with some replying that that would have been too simple – and too cheap !

American designer Thom Browne held his show at the great hall of Paris’s School of Fine Arts. The New Yorker paid hommage to Lady Troubridge, the British feminist rebel. The sculptor was known for her translations of Collette, as well as her androgynous style. In the words of British actress Sienna Miller : ‘the women really look powerful, and now’s the time for that’.

#ParisFashionStories EPISODE 8: EXPERIMENTATION

Ready-to-wear autumn-winter 2019/2020. It was one of Karl Lagerfeld’s favorite sayings: “fashion is ice-cold or burning-hot, lukewarm water is out of place”. Two fashion brands illustrate this very well.

American-Parisian designer Rick Owens pursues a subversive approach. Radical fashion, without compromise. His collection refers to desert people. The crazy makeup is designed by make-up artist Salvia.

A second house specializing in experimentation, is Y/Project, directed by Belgian designer Glenn Martens. Irano Dutch singer Sevda Alizadeh aka Sevdaliza closes the show wearing a voluminous dress. Glenn Martens braids faux leathers and plays with proportions. An explosive episode.

#ParisFashionStories EPISODE 4: HARM-FREE SEDUCTION

Ready-to-wear autumn-winter 2019/2020. For fashion designers, Paris Fashion Week is, among other things, a chance to prove themselves. And they need to know how to last the distance. In just a dozen minutes they need to be able to show clients, buyers and journalists alike their vision. They needs to have convincing answers for questions about not only their sartorial choices, but also about the hot topics of the day.

Isabel Marant is no newcomer to fashion – she began working in the industry in th 1990s. Meanwhile Simon Porte Jacquemus, not even 30 years old, is having huge success with his sales. Both designers know that it’s a good idea to get celebrities to endorse their brands.

Marant, for example, often works with French model Constance Jablonksi to relay her messages. Musician Kiddy Smile often makes appearances on behalf of Simon Porte Jacquemus. Both designers enlisted the help of Alexandre Betak to produce their shows against sumptupus backdrops.

And what happens to all those planks of wood when the show’s over and done? They’re recycled of course! Working in pursuit of beauty is a noble thing – even better if you can do your bit for the planet while you’re at it!

#ParisFashionStories EPISODE 2: SPORT & CINEMA

Ready-to-wear autumn-winter 2019/2020. The world’s most successful designers know it’s a very clever move to have a signature look, and one overarching source of inspiration. At Saint Laurent, Anthony Vaccarello relied heavily on the sartorial DNA of the brand, and the 1971 ‘Scandal’ collection in particular. His ultra-high hems showed models’ legs off to the full, while shoulders were strong and square. As for the setting, a vast mirrored building opposite the Eiffel Tower reflected the well-deserved confidence of Saint Laurent’s parent company LVMH.

Christelle Koché’s is known as the Queen of Street Couture. She embraces the language of the street – and her looks are never over-worked. For this collection she upcycled football shirts, transforming them into skirts and dresses. She’s always been a sports fan, hence the decision to hold her show at Bercy’s Accorhotels arena.
